Sanctuary Village

Students, Moms (and Dad) Volunteering Together this Week

On February 25th and 26th, Mothers for Others coordinated a dinner meal service at Sanctuary Village Temporary Homeless Shelter. This was the first event where we had the privilege of sharing the experience with our sons. In all, there were 26 families who volunteered to make crockpot meals, donate rolls, desserts, granola bars, paper products, water & coffee. We met both days at McQuaid for a quick overview of what to expect, a prayer, then carpooled to the shelter together. On Wednesday, 11 McQuaid moms with sons volunteered to serve and on Thursday, there were 11 mothers, sons and one dad! It was a humbling and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

ConKerr Cancer: Pillowcases

Giving sick kids a reason to smile.

On February 4th, Mothers for Others gathered in the Jesuit residence to welcome Debra Bartz, Director of the Rochester, NY Charter for ConKerr Cancer. 20 women divided into stations for cutting, sewing, pressing and scrapbooking. The pillowcases are not difficult to make, but did require great patience from Debra as she went through the steps many times—especially with some of us. Thank you to Mr. Hochadel and the Quilting Club for allowing us to use their sewing machines and fabric. All-in-all we finished nearly 30 colorful pillowcases that will be packaged up with cards to brighten the days of the many youngsters coping with the fear, stress and loneliness of their hospital stay. If you weren’t able to join us this time, Mothers for Others will be doing this project again in the future.
